Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, MA hosted a dance party in their gym and used 16 rental lights to help with their decor. Here's what the client had to say: "Our function was in a gym so it was a but difficult to take the "gym look" away but your lights helped tremendously".
Yes, gyms are hard to light. Hard only because of the size. The key is you want to use lots of lights. The more the better. 1 light about every 6-12 feet is recommended and the average gym size is 100' by 60'. That's 320 feet of wall space to light, so somewhere in the range of 28-54 lights assuming you want to light all 4 walls, all the way around. At $17 a light that's going to cost $476-$918. If that's a little more than you wanted to spend then some strategies to reduce the expense is to focus the lighting on a smaller area or simply spread them around further. Lighting is a decorative effect so its totally up to you and the event budget to determine how many to rent. The clients who sent in this photo did a spectacular job using just 16 lights!
